TRAILERTAIL INSTALL - FAQ
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
A: The pairs of template support tabs should be evenly spread along the outside cardboard template edge to make it easier to align on the trailer edge. Although the exact locations are not important, the template will lie better on the trailer door if you avoid placing the template tabs over the existing trailer door hinges.
A: While holding the template up to the door in the correct position, look along the outside trailer edge for any interference with existing trailer door hinges. These holes will NOT be used and do NOT require drilling. Find the four pairs of transfer marks for lateral hinges that will be used for the lateral panel—these will require drilling for elevator bolt placements. For custom TrailerTails®, drill all of the holes.
Generally, a good rule-of-thumb is to align the template just under the top trailer lights, ¼” to ½” clearance below the top lockrod’s claw.
A: No. It is possible to install a TrailerTail® in any order although following our recommended process will make installation easier and faster.
A: Yes. The TrailerTail® will not fold correctly unless the threaded bolt of the rod end points towards the trailer door.
A: There are 8 locations on the TrailerTail® that require the 3.75” bolts: where the top and bottom panel hinges attach to the trailer door. 4” bolts are used for both the lateral hinges and the metal origami hinges where the lateral panel connects to the top and bottom panels.
The TrailerTail® for dry van trailers is designed for 2 people to install in 1 hour. The current record installation time is 2 people in 28 minutes. Refrigerated trailers require 2 people for 1.5 hours due to specialized attachment hardware.
