TRAILERTAIL - FAQ

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q: Does a TrailerTail® really save fuel?

CFD image TrailerTail Aerodynamic Fuel Saving technology

A: Yes, The TrailerTail® fuel savings have been proven in on-road SAE Type II third-party tests. TrailerTail® will deliver 6.6% fuel- efficiency gains at 65 mph and over 10% when combined with ATDynamics-Transtex Skirts. The patented TrailerTail® design lowers vehicle fuel consumption by reducing low-pressure suction drag directly behind a trailer. ATDynamics TrailerTail® technology delivers over twice the fuel-efficiency gains of any other commercially available rear drag reduction technology and is the only rear-mounted aerodynamic device which allows fleets to fully comply with 2010 CARB trailer aerodynamics regulations.

Q: How does the TrailerTail® impact the loading and unloading of cargo at docking bays?

Animation TrailerTail

A: The patented TrailerTail® design allows drivers to operate swing doors normally. The device opens with one-touch and collapses automatically or in less than four seconds flush against the doors for normal loading / unloading.

Q: Is it legal?

A: Yes, the TrailerTail® is the only device to officially demonstrate compliance with DOT regulation CFR 658.16(b)(4) which allows for a 5 foot extension for non-cargo carrying aerodynamic purposes.

Q: How does the TrailerTail® benefit the environment?

A: Each TrailerTail® equipped trailer driving with the TrailerTail® for 50k miles per year reduces the carbon dioxide it releases into the atmosphere by over 4 tons. The annual emissions savings from each installed TrailerTails® saves approximately the amount of CO2 that the average passenger car emits in a year.  TrailerTails® are projected to reduce oil consumption and greenhouse gas emissions by as much as the projected growth in the US electric vehicle industry over the next 5 years – at 1/30th of the capital cost.

Q: How does a the TrailerTail® enhance the safety and performance of a tractor-trailer?

A: Because the TrailerTail® streamlines airflow and minimizes turbulent vortices behind a trailer, truck drivers notice less sway at the backs of their trailers and improved visibility when using their rear-view mirrors during rain or snow. Trailing passenger cars experience both a smoother ride and a decrease in hazardous road spray, plus, without the drafting benefits of suction drag, they have less incentive to harass truck drivers by tailgating dangerously close to the rear of tractor-trailers.

Q: How quickly will a TrailerTail® pay-off?

A: TrailerTail® will pay for themselves in less than a year for high mileage trailers.

Q: What about rain/ice/dirt/grime?

By streamlining the airflow at the rear of vehicles, the TrailerTail® reduces the turbulent spray behind a trailer and leads to lower snow, dirt, and grime accumulation on trailer doors. All latching mechanisms have been tested in snow and ice conditions.

Q: How long does a TrailerTail® installation take?

The TrailerTail® for dry van trailers is designed for 2 people to install in 1 hour.  The current record installation time is 2 people in 28 minutes.  Refrigerated trailers require 2 people for 1.5 hours due to specialized attachment hardware.
